What is an Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling, and sometimes infection. If left untreated, it can interfere with walking, exercise, or daily life.

When is Surgery Needed?

Many people try to manage ingrown toenails at home, but this often only provides temporary relief and can lead to a cycle of pain and infection. It’s time to consider a permanent solution if you’re experiencing:

  • Recurring pain, redness, or swelling at the nail edge
  • Repeated infections or pus drainage
  • Pain when wearing shoes, exercising, or even under bedsheets
  • Constant anxiety about your toe or trying to “dig out” the nail yourself
  • No lasting relief from routine podiatry trimming

The Procedure - What to Expect

We know the word “surgery” can be nerve-racking, but this is a simple, straightforward procedure performed right here in our sterile Manly clinic. Your comfort is our top priority.

A Pain-Free Experience: We begin by applying a local anaesthetic to the toe. You will not feel any pain during the procedure.

Gentle Removal: Once you are completely numb, we gently and precisely remove the small, problematic edge of the nail that is growing into the skin.

Preventing Regrowth: We apply a special solution (phenol) to the nail root in that specific corner. This stops only that offending edge from ever growing back, without affecting the rest of your healthy nail.

Dressing & Aftercare: The toe is dressed, and we provide you with a simple take-home aftercare kit and instructions. You can walk out immediately.

The Benefits:

  • No stitches required
  • No hospital visit
  • Minimal downtime (most people are back in regular shoes in 1-3 days)

Ingrown Toenail Surgery FAQs

Will the ingrown toenail surgery hurt?

No. Your toe is fully numbed with a local anaesthetic before we begin. You will not feel any pain during the procedure at all. We won’t start until we are both 100% sure you are completely numb.

What about pain after the anaesthetic wears off?

Most patients report minimal discomfort. The feeling is typically a dull ache, which is very different from the sharp, jabbing pain of the ingrown nail (which will be gone!). This is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief (like paracetamol) and rest for the first evening.

Will my toenail look strange or fall off?

This is a very common worry! We only remove the small, problematic sliver of nail on the edge (about 1-2mm). The vast majority of your nail is left completely untouched and looks perfectly normal. Once healed, the nail will simply look slightly narrower and, most importantly, healthy.

Can I walk or drive home afterwards?

You will be able to walk out immediately, but the anaesthetic will make your toe feel “strange.” For your own safety and comfort, we strongly recommend you arrange for someone to drive you home. You should plan to rest and elevate your foot for the rest of the day.

Is this procedure covered by my private health fund?

Yes, in most cases. This surgical procedure has its own item number and is covered by most private health funds (depending on your level of “extras” cover). We can provide you with the item code to check with your fund before your appointment.
