Why do I need to have my orthotics reviewed in 12 months?

Our orthotics are precisely designed to have a blend of durability and comfort, meaning they don’t have an unlimited lifespan. We use premium materials that allow for shock absorption, cushioning and functionality, however these materials eventually wear down over time. When your orthotics start to wear down, they don’t offer the same level of support and comfort. While this may not be obvious and affect their function initially, over time this may mean you no longer have the support you need and may risk your pain or problem returning.

What to expect at your 12 month review appointment

The podiatrist will assess the following:

  1. Review orthotics wear and tear – You have invested good money in your orthotics so its important they are working as prescribed and supporting your feet and legs correctly.
  2. Checking covers – The cover of the orthotics are used to protect the underlying materials, while also providing cushioning and comforting. Sometimes we can replace the cover without needing to create a new set of orthotics.
  3. Review your footwear – Footwear plays a vital role with your lower limb health and can have a huge impact on the success or failure of your orthotics. There are so many types of footwear and it can be confusing, so it’s important you have the right footwear for you specifically.
  4. Review your initial symptoms – Ideally we’d like to see you still be symptom free the following year, however sometimes this isn’t always the case and your orthotics may require additional support or adjustments to best suit the changes that have occurred over the past year.
  5. Review gait – During your appointment, the podiatrist will assess your walking and/or running in your footwear and orthotics. This is generally performed and shown to you through video gait analysis.
  6. Review prescribed exercises and other treatment options – Patients often benefit from a range of different exercises. These often need to be implement or adjusted at this appointment.
